"Dream Woods"
"An original Art form revealing the hidden beauties of the plant world

through composition and enhancement"

Art by: David Abhari

Curated by: Erica Friend

Exhibit Showing: September 4-October 1, 2011

Closing Reception: October 1, 2011 @ 1-3pm

Different components of plants and trees like branches, leaves, bark, and seedpods contain a hidden visual message for David Abhari. He sees trees as cathedrals of nature and aside from the apparent beauties of the form, structure and color, he sees each component as part of a composition that could conjure a personal story in viewers mind. Unveiling these hidden images through composition and enhancement became David's way to express his appreciation for the captivating beauties of the plant world.

It Calls You Back:

An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing
Author Reading & Book Signing

with Luis J. Rodriguez

Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 5-7pm

Luis J. Rodriguez will read from his latest book, the long-awaited sequel to his bestselling memoir Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing details the intense struggles Luis has had to be a writer, father, husband, revolutionary, and healer, including dealing with addictions, family abuse, and a son who did a total of fifteen years in prison.

"In this brilliantly jagged sequel to the gang-life classic, Always Running (1994), acclaimed journalist, poet and fiction writer Rodriguez... chronicles his struggle to leave behind a drug- and crime-ridden world that always threatened to 'call him back.' An acute political consciousness and powerful love of the written word ultimately saved the author from the lurking dangers of the street and the 'nothing life' to which most Latinos in East Los Angeles were automatically condemned... Raw, searing reading from start to finish."

If A Tree Falls: The Story of the Earth Liberation Front
Wednesday, October 19, 2011 @ 7:30-10:00 pm

This film tells the remarkable story of the rise and fall of this ELF cell, by focusing on the transformation and radicalization of one of its members.

Part coming-of-age tale, part cops-and-robbers thriller, the film interweaves a verite chronicle of Daniel on house arrest as he faces life in prison, with a dramatic recounting of the events that led to his involvement with the group. And along the way it asks hard questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism.

Drawing from striking archival footage -- much of it never before seen -- and intimate interviews with ELF members, and with the prosecutor and detective who were chasing them, IF A TREE FALLS explores the tumultuous period from 1995 until early 2001 when environmentalists were clashing with timber companies and law enforcement, and the word "terrorism" had not yet been altered by 9/11.

BK Bomar

October 7, 2011

I started storytelling at the age of ten around campfires, family gatherings as well as with friends.  Storytelling was our source of entertainment and is how we dealt with some of the hardships of life.

I grew up in the town of Camden, in the backwoods of Tennessee in the 70s.  We lived on 500+ acres of land in a region where supernatural events were a part of everyday life.  The fun and exciting stories that I share are family-oriented stories, which include my kin, my friends and my experiences.

Janet Gonzalez is a mixture of cultures, being Mexican born and transplanted to Puerto Rican turf in the North side of Chicago at the age of ten.  She learned at an early age what racism looked like from her own kind, getting laughed at in school for not speaking the language. After a fourteen year love affair with the Windy city Janet relocated to the City of Angels to follow her dream of acting unexpectedly falling in love with spoken word. She has made it her purpose to tell the hidden stories of Immigrants, the stories no one cares or wants to tell for fear or shame. Trying to raise awareness on immigration, gang violence and drug abuse Janet  has been featured at prestigious  universities like UCLA, USC, Cal  State Poly, and  Redlands University to name a few. Janet  Gonzalez has become the voice for thousands of crying souls that go unnoticed, those who are only talked about when the government or media need someone to blame for an economic crisis.  Janet does not consider herself a writer or a poet, as she says she’s only a work in progress.

Los de Abajo Printmaking Collective

¡Viva la Revolución!

Art Showing: September 11-October 23, 2010

Los de Abajo’s mission as a group is to promote the love and appreciation for fine art prints and to explore new ways of approaching printmaking. To the group’s delight, this wonderful medium is regaining popularity and breaking new ground in the visual arts today.

The works produced for this series rather than just commemorate the 1910 Revolution, attempts to analyze, deconstruct and explore images and icons that have become embedded in our collective history. The revolutionary spirit that spread like fire over a century ago still burns today in the struggle of the Zapatistas in Chiapas, the teachers in Oaxaca, and in the hearts of all those who believe in justice and solidarity for all.

The following Los de Abajo members produced this exhibition:

Kay Brown

Poli Marichal

Don Newton

Victor Rosas

Marianne Sadowski

Come and experience the origins of this very special ceremony from the indigenous perspective in a presentation of music, stories, and songs. This program will also include an introduction to the philosophical indigenous concepts of Duality and its relationship to the cycles of nature and life and death.  You will also hear an ancient oral traditional story on the great journey to Mictlan – the story of what happens to us once we leave this world of the living to our place of rest and transformation. *Presented by Michael Heralda.

African American Experience in Mexico

Wednesday, Oct.13, 2010 at 7-8pm

Myself and Eight other African Americans set out to see the Mexico rarely seen on TV.  This adventure was primarily to experience, the African component of what is Mexican culture and history.  Rather than being something distinct, and obvious, the African component is so integrated into what is inherently Mexican, that at times it was the process of elimination that indicated the African presence. When native populations were decimated, Africans replaced this lost labor due to skills in mining and farming, and then infused their cultures into what would become Mexican culture. Can you identify the African component in Mariachi music? It's a little more than looking for a drum. Come out as I relive my trip to Mexico by viewing some of the photos from a layman's point of view. It was a great experience! ¡Viva Mexico!

Each asks him to share his turkey, but he refuses all except Death. In return, Death gives him a bottle of water which will heal any illness.
