Author Reading: "Chicano"

Sept 10th., Saturday 5 to 7pm
Sylvia Vasquez will be reading from her late father’s book which in the 1970’s popularized the term Chicano and hit the top-ten best-seller list. Vasquez was a columnist for the L. A Times, a position he took over from Ruben Salazar who was shot by police during the “East LA Riots” of 1970.

Film Screening & Reception: Finger Dance
by Michael Angelo Centeno. Sept 10th., Saturday 8 to 10pm
Based on a short story by LUIS J RODRIGUEZ, Fingerdance tells the story of Tutti, a Chicano kid from East L.A., and his growing resentment towards his violent and harsh father. The film takes us through Tutti’s childhood recollections as he tries to piece his memories together in order to make sense of their broken relationship. A reception with musical entertainment will follow!

Community Forum: After the Flood
Sept 11th., Sunday 3 to 5pm

Who is to blame for the death and devastation? If people died simply because they were poor, why were they poor in the first place? Has Hurricane Katrina permanently changed the political landscape in the United States? What role will culture play in the aftermath? Come out and talk. Bring your pain, your passion, your thoughts and your visions!

Fundraiser: EZLN

Help Tia Chucha’s raise funds for the EZLN. Special musical performances by: EL VUH and MEZKLAH. $7 donation at the door; proceeds will help the EZLN come out of hardships after being under red alert.

Live Performance: Blues Straight Up
Sept 24th., Saturday 8 to 10pm
Blues Straight Up’s repertoire features great blues standards with original compositions, plus the band also performs Blues en Español. Come and enjoy an evening of great Blues Music!
