Writer’s Salon

Postponed Until Further Notice

Meetings continue every 1st Saturday of the month from 12 to 2 PM
The Salon is open to all ages. There will be a short presentation around a topic, introduction to the works of a specific writer, and a writing exercise to be followed up at the next meeting. The rest of the time will be to workshop works by participating members critiqued by the group. A work to be critiqued can not exceed three pages and anyone wishing to participate should bring ten copies for the rest of the group.

There is no charge to participate in the Workshops. A 10% discount is extended to participants who decide to purchase books before or following a workshop meeting.

Noon Poetry Lab

Meetings every 1st Saturday of the month from 10 to 12 PM
Learn, Discover & Develop Your Poetry-Writing Skills
The Lab is open to all ages. There will be a short presentation period around a topic, introduction to the works of a specific poet, and a writing exercise to be followed up at the next meeting. A majority of the time will be devoted to “workshopping” new works. Works can not exceed more than two pages and anyone wishing to participate should bring 10 copies for the rest of the group.
 

Intro. to Music Theory

 
Every Saturday, Call for Times
Elementary music concepts will be introduced. Briefly, the Science of Sound and the History of Music Theory and its evolution until present will be studied. Students will gain a conceptual understanding of the elements of music and the interaction of these elements. The skill of music reading will also be developed.

Guitar Lessons

 
Every Saturday @11 am-2pm
Technical and practical concepts concerning the guitar will be covered. The Fundamentals of Music will be introduced to gain an understanding of the theory and how it can be applied to communicate with others while rehearsing, or performing a song or any piece of music. Students will develop their creativity, confidence, and will learn responsibilities that come during a performance. The objective is that the student will be prepared for a final performance in front of an audience (Singing is optional). But most importantly, the idea is to develop an intimate relationship with your guitar.

Huehuetlatolli Xochitl Tonan-Women's Group

Huehuetlatolli Xochitl Tonan: Women's Wholistic Indigenous Health Project, is a women's empowerment project. Its focus is capacity building, or capacitacion - through which women learn skills necessary to become organizers in our communities. Huehuetlatolli Xochitl Tonan offers workshops on alternative health practices using traditional indigenous forms of healing, medicine, and nutrition. Through this process, participants are encouraged to actively engage in rescuing our ancestral forms of achieving the integral health of our communities . Call in advance.

We are inviting all women from the communities in the San Fernando Valley to come and share your experiences as women!

We will be presenting different workshops: Culture and Dance, Women and Power, Women, Your Medicine: Your Art, Preventing Chronic Illnesses, Women and the Indigenous Kitchen, how teas and purified water can prevent heart attacks, and how to Fung Shui your bedroom the Indigenous way.

We will meet this goal by fostering a mentor-style relationship between tutors and students, while incorporating our students' cultural interests. By combining culture and education, we will prepare our youth to independently pursue their ideals."
