Featured Artists for the Month of May!
May 21st Rolando Ortiz, born in East L.A to undocumented parents in 1975. He was the youngest of 7 children. Three of Rolando's brothers belong to the same gang that paved the way for Rolando to follow. Rolando spent time behind bars as a minor and an adult. Rolando began to write poetry as a way of self therapy well incarcerated. Rolando published his first work on The Bandana Republic, an anthology of gang members and their affiliates. He is also working on two other anthologies, Angels with Broken Wings by Jay Skills. It’s an anthology of former and current prisoners. He will also be part of Street Smarts by the founder and creator of Def Poetry Jam Bruce George. Rolando feels that reading and writing saved his life. Rolando hope to heal the Latino community with his writing and share his story with troubled youth so they won’t make the same mistakes he has.
May 28th Jennifer Alumbaugh, no stranger to the mic when she made her debut into the open mic community of Los Angeles on May 29, 2009 during her first visit to Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural; 2003 marked her first spoken word performance, in San Antonio, TX. After moving to LA, she began hosting a rather humble open mic at a campus coffee shop where she attended graduate school.
Upon discovering the warm and familial atmosphere of Tia Chucha's, she was soon welcomed as a regular poet on Friday nights. In January 2010, she created and began facilitating In the Words of Womyn, a written and spoken word workshop for womyn. Jennifer is passionate about many things, not the least of which is encouraging and empowering womyn "to give sound to her story and volume to her voice." She believes that the healing of a community must include the empowering of womyn--to write, to speak, to heal. To learn more about Jennifer's mission and the In the Words of Womyn workshop visit: www.inthewordsofwomyn.com.
